This is the first comprehensive history of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), the central humanitarian assistance organization of American Quakers during the first half of the 20th century. It describes the creation of a "humanitarian marketplace," the development of humanitarian techniques in relation to the media, donors, and recipients, as well as the complex relationship between religious and secular elements.
This is the first comprehensive account of the International Labour Organization's (100 year-long) history. The Centenary publication shows the ILO as a forum and an actor in the area of Global Social Policy. It opens a perspective on the manifold ways the ILO over a hundred years sought to structure debates on social policy across national borders and render practical contributions for the world of work and the area of social policy at large.
This series of scholarly works aims to document and understand the work of the International Labour Organization since its creation by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. Gathering together the research of an international network of academics from history, law, economics and sociology, the series looks critically at the role of the ILO at key moments of the twentieth century, and draws attention to the historical dimension of some today's global issues and challenges. By bringing a transnational perspective to the discussion, the publications aim to offer an in-depth understanding of the complex interaction between national and international policies.
